Our History

In 1978 the District Superintendent (Rev. Bob Gould) and the District Executive Committee, and several Alliance families living in Saskatoon, agreed to plant an Alliance Church in the River Heights and Lawson Heights area. At that time the area of Lawson Heights was just beginning to be developed and there was nothing North of Pinehouse Drive, and there were no evangelical churches anywhere in the area. Announcements were made at University Drive Alliance, Westgate Alliance, Meadowlark Park (which is now Avalon Alliance) and the Chinese Alliance churches put together a core group of about 30 adults and children to work toward planting this new church. Then, on September 17th, 1978, with her first pastor Rev. Ernest Regier, the first service of Lawson Heights Alliance Church happened in the small gym of the River Heights School. By the Spring of 1980, they started construction of our building. And on December 14th, 1980, the congregation moved out of River Heights School into Phase One here at 159 Pinehouse Drive and held its first service in the gymnasium. Two years later, in December of 1982, the doors of this 700 seat sanctuary were opened And in 1985 the basement classrooms and youth spaces were completed.

After Pastor Regier, Rev. Peter Bergman became the senior pastor between 1986 and 1988. Following him, between 1989 and 1995, Rev. Murray Boldt was its senior pastor. Between 1996 and 2000, Rev. Arden Adrian became the senior pastor. And during his term, God honoured the faith the faithfulness of this congregation and in 1996 the mortgage on this building was paid off. In August in 2002, Rev. Mike Newson became the senior pastor. Today, his ministry partners are Rev. Tyler Rody (Family Ministries Pastor), and Mr. Aaron Newson (Worship, Youth and Young Adult Pastor).

Since 2002 we have undergone a number of renovations. like expanding our front entrance and replaced the steeple with a more contemporary look. Painted the entire building inside and out and paved the parking lot.  

But besides the aesthetics, we have also reengineered our methods to be relevant in the 21st Century, so that we can keep being faithful to the mandate of Jesus and His Great Commission. That meant that a decade ago, we had to begin a major shift from an attractional approach to doing Church, to becoming a church that multiplies disciples, who would then multiply churches. To do that, we knew we would have to train followers of Jesus here at Lawson, to be able to influence and impact their own Life Network, until all have heard, in Saskatoon and surrounding cities, from our mouths to their ears, the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
